2011-2012 Tar Heel Junior Historian
Authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1953, THJHA is sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History, part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. The purpose of the association is to encourage North Carolina students in the study of their local communities’ and the state’s histories. Junior historian clubs involve students in grades 4–12. All 4th grade AIG students at JCS (and most other schools in this district) are a part of the THJH Club and are invited to compete in their various competitions.
Being a part of this club allows us the opportunity to participate in the THJH contest. Each student will be asked to submit two entries from two DIFFERENT areas. (See Contest Areas below) Your 4th grader along with students from all around North Carolina will travel to Raleigh on April 27th, 2012 for the THJHA Annual Convention where the winners of the contest will be announced. This is a wonderful opportunity for 4th grade students to learn more about our great state of North Carolina. Please visit the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association's website to find out more about this organization.

I will review each of the different types of entries with the students. Once students have chosen two types of entries they are interested in pursuing, I will send home copies of the rules and requirements for those entries. Students are allowed to change which areas they have chosen as long as I am notified of the change. (Some categories we are limited on the number of entries we may have from each school group.) Since Science Fair projects are due in January, it is suggested that the students turn in one of their entries in by the end of January and the second entry by mid February. If you would like to see the rules and requirements for any of the contests you can visit the drop down menu attached to this page labeled Contest Rules and Requirements.
