2011-2012 R.O.A.R.
R. O. A. R. - (Rivalry of Awesome Readers Competition)
General Information:
This is a district level competition where our students will be competing against other 5th grade students from the seven elementary schools in our district. The competition will be held on March 21st from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Museum of the Albemarle.
Students are REQUIRED to read nine novels throughout this school year. During the competition the team(s) will be asked questions about each novel from the list below.
Books we will be reading this year are:
1) *The Watson's Go to Birmingham by Christopher Curtis
2) *The Legend of Jimmy Spoon by Kristiana Gregory
3) *Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
4) *Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
5) The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney
6) Free Baseball by Sue Corbett
7) Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
8) The Cricket in Times Square by George Seldon
9) *Dear Mr. Henshaw by Bevelry Cleary
*These titles will be read in class as part of their whole group or Literature Circle instruction.
All other titles need to be read as part of the students' Take Home Reading. I have copies of each title in which students will beable to check out. Because we don't have enough copies for all students to have every novel at the same time.... it is important that students keep any novel no more than one month!
